Why does my ice maker in the fridge not work

Having an automatic ice maker in the fridge used to be a luxury option in the refrigeration industry, but now it’s becoming one of the most common features of the unit. Nowadays, people can make ice at the click of a button, but what if one day you try to dispense it, and it’s not there? That’s something you’d want to fix as quickly as possible and we’re going to help you with that.

7 main reasons why my ice maker doesn’t work

Unit Settings. Modern manufacturers offer two or three different ways to switch off your ice maker, so you may accidentally turn it off.
Solution: If you have a digital display, press the ice maker or power button to switch it on. You can also manually flip up the fill bar.
Water Supply. The ice maker needs a steady water supply with good pressure to make ice.
Solution: Disconnect the main water supply hose to ensure it is not kinked or frozen. Sometimes you need to replace the water filter if it’s clogged.
Tray Sensor. A special detector defines if a tray is full. In this case, it stops producing ice.
Solution: Most units use a big lever as a sensor, so it deactivates the system when it is lifted up. Follow your equipment manuals to put everything in the proper position.
Ice Buildup. Sometimes ice makers may overflow and freeze up the whole assembly. The water channel becomes clogged with ice and does not allow fresh water to dispense new ones.
Solution: If you see the buildup, defrost the unit manually.
Inlet Valve. This part directly interacts with your water supply hose and lets the water into the system when needed. Over time, calcium buildup might clog the valve and prevent fresh water from entering your ice maker.
Solution: Sometimes the units have a button to test the water valve. Press and hold it until the ice maker starts filling up with water. If it doesn’t, your valve may be broken. You can also test the part by directly feeding power to it.
Ice Maker Assembly. It has ice-shaped forms that spin 360 degrees and drop ice in a tray once fully frozen. Over time, the mechanism can break and stop spinning. The new water won’t be able to be delivered into the assembly if it can’t complete the spin cycle.
Solution: If the ice maker assembly has a test button on it, hold it and wait until the ice maker starts working.
Malfunctioning Thermostat. This part is responsible for regulating the temperature in the ice maker.
Solution: Find the thermostat in your refrigerator and check if it controls the freezer’s temperature as well. Adjust it to a colder setting if your ice is not firm enough. Conversely, if the ice is frosted or stuck together, slightly increase the temperature.
